We had in-room onsen, which was amazing. The public onsen was also good. Dinner in a private room for our party was delicious. The town is very convenient to the mountains and the rest of the Unzen part of the national park.

I love the dinner so much. The food is outstanding if compare with other ryokan. Dinner is perfect but breakfast is ok not as good as dinner. The room is big and comfortable. What I impress is they got 2 bathroom which is so rare in Japan.
Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December.
Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December. Not so pleasant if it rains.
Hiking nearer the ridge may not be suitable to those who are not so fit as it can get quite steep.
Using the ropeway could ease the trip a bit for those who have some health challenges.

Suitable place for relaxation and hot springs, The accessibility is not so convenient unless you travel by car. The hot-spring-village is just lovely small so it’s better to combine with other nearby sightseeing places.
This is a cozy hotel with traditional rooms and a small onsen. The owners are incredibly helpful and very sweet. The location is convenient and within walking distance to the town and they provide parking if you inform them in advance. The rooms here are really special - they are huge tatami rooms with comfortable futons. The rooms have recently been renovated so that they keep their traditional feeling but are not dusty or dated. Every thing is very clean.
The location was great since it was within walking distance to Unzen Jigoku and many other tourist attractions. The food buffet selections were very diverse and I appreciated the modifications to make it safer and to prevent the spread of Covid. I enjoyed the arcade area with ping pong tables and karaoke. I also enjoyed the rooftop onsen and I thought the bath temperature was perfect.
This is one of our favorite place so far in Japan. The suite is very big with 2 rooms. Very quiet and zen. The common kitchen is small but friendly. There is a small grocerie store 5 mins away that sells everything you need to cook or ready to eat meals. We enjoyed the one day hike from the hotel, the public onsen and the walk through the park. We wish, we could have stayed longer.
Excellent modern ryokan with very hospitable staff and amazing fresh and high quality food. We were served by the owner and his wife who were humble and friendly people.
A family of 4, we stayed 2 nights in a room with private onsen. The room was modern, clean and the fact that we had a private onsen to ourselves was a winner. Highly recommend this hotel.
They’re spot on with all the things that you’d want from a highly reputable hotel.
The cleanness, great location with incredible scenery, amazing food and not to mention the ‘out-of-this-world’ service quality.
For the price, I was very satisfied with the Ryokan experience at Azumaen.
I certainly would recommend to others.
It's a very relaxing place in a beautiful area for a good price. The hot springs in the hotel room with the sea view was as amazing as it looks in the photos! Some of the reviews said that the staff didn't speak English very well, but we don't know any Japanese and had no trouble communicating.
Truly a home away from home, and the perfect social hostel experience. Very kind and knowledgable owner, perfect location steps away from the bus station, Unzen visitor center and Unzen Jigoku, and a local onsen ticket is included in the stay price. Can't wait to come back!
It rained the majority of the time I was there, but nevertheless I had a great time!! The nature in/around Unzen is beautiful, but best of all were the people I met at the hostel, especially Jennie and Momo who were working there when I was there. Thanks!!
The location is good, only few minutes from bus stop. I received hotel’s email guiding me how to get there after booking. The staff is very friendly and good communication, so helpful. The room is big and have everything I need. Good experience in Unzen.
I really liked the authenticity of the place, it looks like we are transported back in time maybe 50 years ago during the boom of Japan economy. The hotel could use a little refreshing of the interior decoration but it is also part of its charm.
The view from my room was great. I could see the sunset lake. The room was clean, and the facility was new. The hotel’s location is center of the unzen onsen district, which is convenient. The price is very reasonable, and I would pay more.
The hotel is a bit old and the quality of food is just so so. Of course, the food served had a lot of vegetables, which is good. The view of this hotel should be very nice but it was a foggy and the visibility is so low just 20M to 30M.
The room included drinks at the rooftop and at the bar lounge. Also, the room was big and the bath was amazing. The hotel was right in front of the Unzen hot springs so we could walk around and look at where the martyrs were killed.
While not the most elegant hotel in Unzen, it was a good balance of price with services and ambience. The dinners and breakfasts were amazing and a highlight of our stay in Japan so far.
